5 Things To Do When You Are Locked Out of Your Home

Have you recently locked yourself out of your house? Though it is a good idea to prepare in advance and give a spare key to someone you trust, there are situations where you may not be able to obtain the spare. From finding an open window to calling a locksmith, here are a few things you can try when you’re locked out of your house again.

1. Ask For Assistance

Do you live with your family, friends, or roommates? If you’re locked out, you can always ask them for assistance. Even though you don’t want to feel like the “needy” roommate, it’s better than standing out in the cold without a way to get into your home. However, if you rent, you can try contacting your landlord to get into your unit. Usually, they should always have a spare on hand to drop off to you.

2. Check for Unlocked or Open Windows

Although you should always lock your windows, checking for open or unlocked windows is one of the easiest ways to get into your home if you forgot your key. All you have to do is pull up the screen and window, and squeeze your body through. However, be careful that you don’t lose your balance or break your window in the process.

3. Use a Credit/Debit Card

Usually, the method of picking your lock with a credit or debit card works on spring-type bolts, but many found it helpful using with standard doorknobs as well. However, homes with deadbolts won’t unlock using a card.
To try picking your lock, pick a card that can be easily disposed of, such as an old gift card. Remember, laminated cards work the best since they’re the most flexible.
All you have to do is stick the card between the door and the frame where the latch is. Then, wiggle the card to and fro to try and slide the latch open. You should put as much weight as possible against the door to avoid breaking your card. However, once you do get your door open, make sure you call a locksmith since your home can be easily broken into with a card.

4. Remove the Door Knob

If you do not have the deadbolt locked on your door, you can enter your home by taking out the door knob. With most door knobs, the mounting screws and hidden. Inspect your knob and look for a small hole on the side. Insert a paper clip or bobby pin into the slot and apply a bit of pressure. When you do this, you will feel some resistance. Push the thin metal piece into the hole as far as you can while twisting and pulling the knob with the other hand. Continue this action until you can completely remove the knob. After you remove the know, you will need to take off the decorative plate. Under this plate will be the lockset. Use your thin metal paper clip or bobby pin to push back the locking mechanism. 5. Call a Locksmith

If nothing else works, it might be time to call a locksmith. Ask a friend for a referral, do some quick research to find a trustworthy company, and compare prices. A professional will be able to easily help you get back inside your home.
